With so many composts now available, we often get asked what is the different between them? So below is a explanation of some of the different types and their uses around the garden.

Multi Purpose Compost, All Purpose Compost

Multi purpose compost or all purpose compost is for general use, right from containers and baskets through to establishing seeds or potting on plants. Within these you'll find ones with added feed and extra moisture retention. You will also find peat free and peat reduced types.

Multi Purpose with added John Innes  Compost/ All Purpose with added John Innes Compost

Multi purpose with added John Innes compost or all purpose with added John Innes compost is a favourite with professional growers. John Innes is a heavier peat and loam based compost with more grit and sand then others. This added to multi purpose gives a great combination for growing.

Tub & basket Compost, Container Compost

Tub & Basket compost or container & hanging basket compost is similar to multi purpose composts but with the benefit of having extra moisture retention and season long feed, especially good for you're bedding plants.

Rose, Tree & Shrub Compost

Rose, Tree & Shrub compost is best when planting larger woody plants into the garden is all about root establishment, using this will encourage the roots through the balanced nutrients added and organic materials.

John Innes

John Innes with its mix of peat, loam sand and grit is a old favorite of many gardeners. There are three types, John Innes No.1 Used  for young plants. John Innes No.2 Ideal for potting plants on, from small containers into the next size up. John Innes No.3, used for mature plants into their final containers. As the numbers increase so does the balance of nutrient.

Ericaceous  Compost

Ericaceous compost is for plants which love acid, and will therefore not tolerate lime. Plants which need this compost are things like, Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camillias. There are also many other plants which will benefit, Japenese Maples, Hydrangeas, Peris and others.

Top Soil

Top soil is the base of the garden. Top soil can be useful if you want to improve the ground conditions in your garden, for leveling holes or establishing new boarders.

Farmyard Manure

Farmyard manure is a must for clay soils and also as a conditioner for tired soil. Using this will help brake down the soil adding in humus and food the plants need. This is also great for sandy soils which will use the manure to hold moisture.

Fruit and Vegetable Compost

If you want the best out of your vegetable and fruit plants then using this will help encourage the best root growth which is essential for the biggest bumper crops, we sell organic bags and also some with added feeds.

Grobag

Grobags are great for growing tomatoes and other vegetables like peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, melons and more. We stock an extra large gro-bag giving more room for root growth which also has added seaweed for feeding. We also stock the classic sized gro-bags.

Seed and Cutting Compost

Seed and cutting compost has the perfect formula for getting the best root growth out of your seed and cuttings. Many containing feed for the initial stages of growth, ensuring you get the best results.
